One of fashion's most successful designers, Liz Claiborne died last week on Tuesday in Manhattan, losing her long battle with cancer. She was 78.

Claiborne has been credited for transforming the way working women dressed in the 1970s and 80s. Liz Claiborne Inc. was the first company founded by a woman to be listed in the Fortune 500. The company continued to grow after her retirement in 1989.
