To own an Hermes bag is a luxury; one which is in high demand. Now, French luxury goods group Hermes has resorted to breeding their own crocodiles to meet this demand, according to Reuters.
The chief executive for Hermes, Patrick Thomas. announced on Monday that they have farms in Australia that will provide the exotic material, which makes up 40% of Hermes' business. "It can take three to four crocodiles to make one of our bags so we are now breeding our own crocodiles on our own farms, mainly in Australia," Patrick Thomas told the Reuters Global Luxury Summit in Paris. Reuters reports that crocodile farming can be expensive since the crocs need to be in separate rooms to avoid any damage to the skin. And what does PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) have to say about this breeding ground in the name of fashion? "The thought of purposely breeding and killing crocodiles for an outdated, overpriced handbag should make any fashionista's skin crawl," said the group in a statement. "If Hermes really wants to be a leader in the fashion industry, it should stop killing animals for cold-blooded vanity and use cruelty-free mock croc and fake snake instead." What are your thoughts?
