Maid in Manhattan:
Pink Tartan

“A chic, uptown feel that’s slightly retro is what it’s all about for spring,” says Kimberley Newport-Mimran, the creative force behind Pink Tartan.

Inspired by New York’s Madison Avenue and the’60s ad era lionized in the Golden Globe-winning TV drama “Mad Men,” Newport-Mimran’s sleek Spring 2009 collection is one classic hipsters will enjoy.

Showcasing strong, clean shapes and streamlined fabrics, Newport-Mimran’s latest glam slam puts a definitive spotlight on well-styled polish.

“That Madison Avenue undertone makes this collection very sophisticated. But it’s wearable glamour. Everything feels good on and flatters a real woman’s body,” says Newport-Mimran.

Dominated by slick shades of grey and navy, intense pops of colour and bold prints, Newport-Mimran’s love of modern art shines in this urbane collection.

“You’ll see a lot of brush-stroke prints taken from artists’ canvases. They’re spattered over the fabrics and are very Jackson Pollock-like in feel,” says Newport-Mimran.

Ottoman-inspired graphics, big enamelled buttons and sensuous fabrics also pump up Pink Tartan’s posh spring vibe.

“I like using a lot of double-faced fabrics. They’re used in couture because they flatter the figure and give a garment more substance. They’re quite a bit heavier, but I’ve been working on new ways to make them light,” says Newport-Mimran.

Pink Tartan’s colourful, ultra-fine cardigans also keep the spring vibe light and bright. Made from luxurious Pima cotton and high twists of yarn, Newport-Mimran says, “They feel great against the skin. The more times they go through the wash the better they get.”

Founded in 2002 with Joseph Mimran - Newport-Mimran's husband and business partner, Pink Tartan boasts a strong star following and a "must-have" presence in 170 American stores including Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.

“The Pink Tartan brand is very much about my personal taste,” says Newport-Mimran. "Every season I push to bring something new to women. But it's got to be wearble, not just about the art of the garment. My constant goal is to design great clothes women can live in.”
